Lisa Randall: CERN or Einstein? Interpreting the Findings
Excerpt:
A violation of Einstein's theory -- wow -- physics doesn't get more exciting than that. Or so the science punditry has it. A few days ago the OPERA (The Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus) experiment in Italy announced they had measured particles to be traveling faster than the speed of light. The implications of this discovery could be sensational -- if it is actually correct and if the least conservative interpretation of the result -- faster than light travel with consequent time travel possibilities -- turns out to be right.

Two years ago I posted about the Russian scientist who questioned Einstein's 'theory' because of the 'time' he used in his fundamental equation. He has been ignored in teaching circles. Scientists 'measurement' of the 'speed of light' again depends upon this: time. In fact the whole of physics depends upon crunching this 'number' for time, t. I am glad to see a more open approach to 'knowledge' and 'measurement' in Randall's discussions. After all, we are still 'observers', aren't we?
Addendum: from NYT:
Randall says:
She held out less hope for time, saying, "I just don't understand it.
"Space we can make progress with."
Is time an illusion?
"I wish time were an illusion," she said as she carved up the last of her chocolate bread pudding, "but unfortunately it seems all too real."
